Sunrise Over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers

Imagine yourself in a desert. Holding an M16. Wearing heavy combat armor inside a humvee. You must be hot!!! This is what the characters in Sunrise Over Fallujah felt. Except with death around every corner.
The novel starts off with Robin Perry AKA “Birdy”, getting put in a squad. Their job is to be a CAU or Civil Affair Unit. What they do is talk to people to see what they need. The units first mission is to just make contact in the city. Well a sand storm delays them. They finally get there and it turns out somebody doesn’t want them there because an RPG flies by. Now they are in a line of humvees so they get out and search the houses. Jonesey, Birdy’s friend, finds the RPG and a kid starts to run. They have to kill him. Just a little taste of the blood to come. They will run two or three more missions. And they are all suspenseful. You’ll have to read the book to find out what happens.
I liked how the story was always fast paced and suspenseful. Something was always happening. I love this war novel. I would very strongly recommend this book to everyone. If you like this book, also look for Fallen Angels another war novel by Walter Dean Myers.
